Undergraduate Awards and Prizes

Student must be nominated by professor and be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Ontario.

Klein-Rosmarin Award in Jewish Teacher Education
The award will be given annually to a student preferably in the first year of the Jewish Teacher Education Program who demonstrates financial need.

Tom and Mary Beck OSOTF Jewish Studies Awards
Given annually on the basis of achievement and financial need to one or more graduate or undergraduate students enrolled in at least one course of those accepted by university diploma or degree programs in Jewish Studies.

Benarroch-Hazan Sephardi Studies OSOTF Award
Given annually to a graduate or undergraduate student for achievement in Sephardi Studies.  Award will be given to the best student in Social Science 3960 6.0 - Interethnic Relations:  The Jewish Minority - The Sephardim in Africa, Asia and Europe.  This award is based on financial need.

Benarroch-Hazan Book Prize
Given annually to a graduate or undergraduate student for the best essay on a topic related to Sephardi Studies.

Allen S. Berg Jewish Studies Award
Given annually to the graduating student who has consistently demonstrated excellence in undergraduate Jewish studies.

Hy and Helen Bergel Prize in Jewish Studies
Given annually to a student who excels in Biblical and Rabbinic Studies:  i.e. Humanities courses 2810; 3810; Hebrew courses 3320; 3330; 3370 and any course deemed to be acceptable by the Centre for Jewish Studies Awards Committee.

Joseph and Jack Bitton Award in Sephardi Studies
Given annually to a student in Sephardi studies who demonstrates academic merit and financial need.

David and Lois Buckstein Bursary
Given annually to a student in Jewish Studies who demonstrates financial need.

Michael and Rena Buckstein Bursary
Given annually to a student in Jewish Studies who demonstrates financial need.

Molly Eisenberg Memorial Award in Jewish Studies
Given annually to a student who has completed one year in the Jewish Studies program, who exhibits talent in his/her chosen discipline and demonstrates financial need.

Helen & Louis Eisenstat Jewish Teacher Education Award
Given annually to a student(s) in the Jewish Teacher Education Program who demonstrates academic merit and financial.

Essay Prize in Canadian Jewish Studies
Given annually to a graduate or undergraduate student for an outstanding essay in Canadian Jewish Studies.

Evelyn Gollin Bursary in Jewish Studies
Given annually to a student in Jewish Studies who demonstrates financial need thus enabling a student an opportunity for study that my not have been available without the extra support.

Fleischer Awards at the Centre for Jewish Studies
Three awards of equal value will be given annually.  One award will be given to a graduate student in Jewish Studies in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, one award will be given to an undergraduate student in the Jewish Teacher Education Program in the Faculty of Education—priority will be given to students in their entering year, and one will be given to a student enrolled in the BA in Jewish Studies.  The students must demonstrate both academic merit and financial need.

Shoshana Kurtz Book Prize
Given annually to a graduating student in the Jewish Teacher Education Program based on academic performance and professional promise.

Martin Lockshin Award in Jewish Studies
Given bi-annually to a graduating student majoring in Religious Studies with a focus on Jewish Studies who has achieved the highest grade point average based on the last two years of full-time study.  In the case of more than one winner, the award will be divided equally among the qualifying candidates.

Metro Toronto Lodge B'nai Brith Prize
Given annually to the student with the best essay in the area of Canadian Jewish Studies submitted in any course at York.

Israel Mida & Family Student Award in Jewish Studies
Given annually to one or more students in the Faculty of Arts in association with the Centre for Jewish Studies, enrolled in Jewish Studies courses and who demonstrate financial need. The award is open to both graduate and undergraduate students with a preference given to undergraduate students enrolled in the BA Program in Jewish Studies.

Alyce Orzy Award in Jewish Teacher Education
Given annually to a student in the Jewish Teacher Education Program demonstrating high academic performance and financial need.  Preference will be given to students from communities outside Toronto.

Etty & Joseph Rubinstein Award in Holocaust Studies or Yiddish Language & Culture
Given annually to two undergraduate students enrolled in courses related to the Holocaust or Yiddish language instruction and culture who demonstrate academic merit and financial need.

Dr. Percy and Bernice Singer Award
Given annually to an undergraduate or graduate student in Jewish Studies with preference to those who are enrolled in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science or involved in the Sport and Recreation program.  This award is based on financial need.

Samuel G. Rosen Memorial Prize
Given annually for the outstanding essay in Jewish studies by a 3rd or 4th year student.

Joseph Zbili Memorial Book Prize
Given annually to an outstanding student in an advanced Hebrew course (3000 or 4000 level).
